In the Storms of Life, I’d rather be on a Paddleboat with a Saint than on a Yacht with a Sinner
In the Storms of Life, I’d rather be on a Paddleboat with a Saint than on a Yacht with a Sinner

"He stilled the storm to a whisper;  the waves of the sea were hushed.  They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven."

Psalm 107:29-30 (KJV)

Storms in life are inevitable. Whether they come as financial struggles, health battles, broken relationships, or unexpected loss, we all eventually find ourselves tossed about by waves beyond our control. It’s in these moments that the vessel we’re in — and more importantly, who we’re in it with — makes all the difference.

The world may be drawn to luxury and status, choosing the grandeur of a yacht captained by charm, wealth, or influence. But when the thunder rolls and the wind howls, those things cannot anchor the soul. I’ve come to learn that I’d rather weather the storm in a small, humble paddleboat with someone who knows how to call on Jesus than on a grand yacht with someone who doesn't know how to pray.

A saint may not have much by the world’s standards — maybe just a worn Bible, a soft-spoken faith, and knees that are familiar with the floor — but their presence brings a calm rooted in something far greater than themselves. They carry peace, because they carry the presence of God. They speak hope when the clouds gather, because they know the One who walks on water and stills the seas.

The disciples were in a storm on the Sea of Galilee — not in a mighty ship, but a modest fishing boat. Yet they had what mattered most: Jesus was with them. The storm came, but it didn’t consume them. His presence made all the difference.

Reflection: Who are you walking (or sailing) through life with? Are they people who will pray with you in the dark? People who believe in God’s Word and speak it over you when your faith falters? Choose companions who carry the Spirit of God, because in the storm, that will be your lifeline.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for being the Master of the wind and the waves. Help me to value Your presence above comfort, and to surround myself with people who trust You deeply. In every storm, remind me that peace doesn’t come from the size of the boat, but from You being in it with me. Amen.
