In 1999, Montgomery Gentry released the song, "Daddy Won’t Sell the Farm” that included the following lyrics,
You can't roll a rock, up a hill that steep
You can't pull roots when they run that deep
He's gonna live and die, in the eye of an urban storm
Daddy won't sell the farm
The song told of a man who had sacrificed, bought some land and worked hard for years farming his land. His farm made it possible for him to provide for his family. As times changed, the city around him was growing and evolving. He was being pressured and treated unkindly by the city folk who wanted him to sell his farm to enable them to develop a more commercialized city. However, he refused to sell because he knew farming had provided a life for he and his family therefore, he was standing firm to what he knew.
This is the exact stance we should take with God’s word, God’s promises, God’s faithfulness. (You can't roll a rock, up a hill that steep) We should stand so tall and firm in our faith, that the rocks of this world cannot reach our crown. The rocks of gossip or slander, rocks of disrespect, rocks of hurt and disappointment, rocks of deceit and dishonesty, rocks of racism, rocks of injustice, all rocks should fall and roll back down the hill to the pits of hell, returned as a failed attempt. (You can't pull roots when they run that deep) Our faith should be rooted so deep that nothing is pressure enough to make us doubt God. No criticism, no disrespect, no losses, no hatred, no words or circumstances should be able to uproot us or shake our faith in God. Don’t be in the in-crowd, stand and be counted as a faithful one to the One who is and will always be faithful to you.
Don’t be like the people of this world, but let God change the way you think. Then you will know how to do everything that is good and pleasing to him.
Romans 12:2 (CEV)
So put on all the armor that God gives. Then when that evil day comes, you will be able to defend yourself. And when the battle is over, you will still be standing firm.
Ephesians 6:13 (CEV)
